Estheticians use many treatments to combat acne. Acne is is the result of oil and bacteria accumulating underneath dead skin cells and becoming inflamed. Estheticians are licensed professionals who specialize in skin care and create treatment plans for different conditions. For acne, estheticians mostly rely on topical treatments, including salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid derived from the bark of the willow tree. Salicylic acid can be found in cleansers, toners, lotions and creams. Salicylic acid combats acne by helping correct the natural exfoliation processes of the skin. Salicylic acid chemically exfoliates dead skin cells from the top layer of skin, which helps prevent the formation of new acne. According to an article on Acne.org, salicylic acid can help break down blackheads and whiteheads. Estheticians use salicylic acid treatments that range in strength from .5 to 4 percent. Defining an individuals skin type can determine which concentration of salicylic acid should be used.
Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is used for most types of acne. Benzoyl peroxide can be found over the counter in cleansers, lotions, creams, bars and gels or by prescription from a dermatologist. Benzoyl peroxide fights acne by introducing oxygen into the pores, which can help inhibit acne formation. It also works to absorb excess oil on the skin's surface, and like salicylic acid, it helps to prevent pore blockage. Estheticians promote benzoyl peroxide because it can help combat the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts. According to the Mayo Clinic, benzoyl peroxide should not be used on the area around the eyes or lips, inside the nose or on sensitive areas on the neck.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is considered an alternative treatment for acne. Tea tree oil is purported to have antiseptic and antibacterial properties that may help prevent the formation of acne bacteria when applied topically. Estheticians use tea tree oil in treatments that target mild to moderate acne. Tea tree oil should be applied directly to the affected area. Some studies show that tea tree oil can be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide, without the side effects.
Side Effects
With all chemical exfoliation preparations, redness, stinging, dryness, peeling and sensitivity to sunlight can occur. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide may produce these symptoms, so it is recommended that you consult a skin care professional before use. Sunscreen should always be part of a daily regimen for those using chemical exfoliants.
