According to Dr. Zein Obagi in "Obagi Skin Health Restoration and Rejuvenation," Obagi is a skin conditioning program used to repair the skin. Dr. Obagi indicates that noticed skin treatments using retinoic acid and hydroquinone were more effective than dermabrasions and chemical peels in 1982. Consequently, Dr. Obagi developed Obagi Blue Peel after exhaustive research and clinical testing, which the website "Faces!" describes as a, "controlled depth trichloroacetic acid peel."

Heat

The website "Faces!" indicates that patients who receive Obagi Blue Peels will experience heat where the physician applies the treatment for up to five minutes. Noting that the sensation is due to the acid content of the treatment, which neutralizes automatically, "Faces" recommends using cooling packs in tandem with cooling fans to ease discomfort.

Skin Improvement

Jones Eye Centers advises that skin will begin to peel for up to 10 days following an Obagi Blue Peel treatment. This peeling is part of the skin's healing process; however, once this process is complete, the skin should exhibit significant visible improvement. Benefits include reductions in sun damage, oversized pores, age spots as well as other blemishes and wrinkles. The skin continues improve up to six weeks post treatment, gradually becoming, "firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and more youthful looking" reports Jones Eye Centers' website. According to Faces, these benefits will last longer if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

Side Effects

The Milo Clinic indicates that side effects of Obagi skin treatments are rare. Nonetheless, it is possible that redness, skin peeling and skin tightness may occur. The side effects listed by Faces! includes scarring, keloids, bacterial or viral skin infections and minor skin pigmentation issues. Although these effects are impossible to circumvent entirely, Jones Eye Centers suggests that visiting an experienced clinician can minimize the risk of these repercussions. Dr. Obagi recommends using his pretreatments and postreatments, both known as the Obagi Nu-Derm System and although Faces! suggests that the Obagi Nu-Derm system may prevent or correct adverse conditions resulting from Obagi Blue Peel treatments, the Milo Clinic avers that the pretreatment and post treatment options are not foolproof.
