Overview

Headaches come from a variety of sources. Stress, anxiety, exhaustion or other illnesses can all cause headaches. With such a variety of medications on the market, you have a number of treatment options. However, if you want to take a natural approach instead of taking medication every time you get a headache, try massaging.

Step 1

Wash hands with warm water and soap. Pat them dry with a dry, clean towel.

Step 2

Apply lotion or a massage oil such as peppermint or lavender to moisturize your hands and provide some gentle aromatherapy.

Step 3

Use your thumbs to start massaging at the nape of the neck (one thumb on each side at the base of the hairline). Massage gently in a circular motion working your way around the hairline toward the front of the ears. Spend 10 to 15 seconds massaging each area that you touch.

Step 4

Use your pointer fingers to massage the pressure points in front of your ears. Press gently while massaging for 10 to 15 seconds, working your way up toward your temples (the spaces on the side of your head in front of your hairline on your forehead).

Step 5

Use your pointer and middle fingers to slowly massage your temples in a circular motion for 20 to 30 seconds. Pressure tends to build at the temples, causing headaches.

Step 6

Place all fingers of each hand on each side of your head. Apply gentle pressure and massage your scalp in a circular motion for 25 to 30 seconds.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you carry tension in your upper body, start the massage on the outside of the shoulders and work your way in and up to the nape of the neck. Drink 8 oz. of water before the massage. Dehydration can cause headaches. Take deep breaths while massaging.
