The pedals on your bicycle are an important element to ensure a safe and comfortable ride. It is easy to take pedals for granted with so many other components to a bike, but they are prone to problems just like any other part. Pedals get chipped, cracked and stuck as part of regular riding. If you notice clicking noises, or your feet begin to slip, it is likely time for a change. When they are damaged, the best fix usually is to replace the pedals, since they are inexpensive and usually last for quite a while.

Repair Bent Cage

Step 1

If the inner cage is bent but there is no other damage, remove any reflectors from the outer part of the pedal. This repair works for metal bike pedals only.

Step 2

Remove the pedal cage from the body of the pedal. It is usually attached with Phillips-head bolts.

Step 3

Place the dented pedal cage in a vise. Form it back to shape with a hammer or wrenches. Reassemble the entire pedal and attach it back into place.

Replace Damaged Pedal

Step 1

Remove the right pedal by turning the axle in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the left pedal by turning the axle in a clockwise direction. Use a special pedal wrench or an adjustable wrench if necessary. Some bikes have a small hole at the end of the pedal that calls for an Allen key to remove the pedal.

Step 2

Apply a coating of waterproof grease into the threads of your new pedals before you install them. This will stop them from seizing if you wish to remove them in the future.

Step 3

Attach the right pedal to your bike by turning the wrench in a clockwise direction. Attach the left pedal by turning the wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Ensure that the pedals spin and are securely attached before you ride the bike.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a propane torch on the crank arm if the pedal is stuck, or remove the crank arm with the pedal and place it in a vise to get better leverage with the wrench.
