A number of different techniques can get rid of unwanted facial hair. Plucking, waxing and shaving are all easy and efficient methods of hair removal, but only provide temporary results. Permanent hair removal offers long-term results, yet is often quite costly. So, the amount, location and thickness of your facial hair, coupled with your gender, skin sensitivity and the cost, can greatly influence which technique you choose to use.

Step 1

Pluck the unwanted hair. If you only have a few facial hairs, plucking them with a sterile tweezers is an effective option.

Step 2

Apply a depilatory. Women with hair on the upper lip can remove the unwanted hair with a depilatory, which chemically dissolves the hairs. Regular use is necessary to maintain results.

Step 3

Wax the unwanted facial hair. Another option for minimal hair growth is regular waxing. Warmed wax is applied to the skin and then removed with strips of fabric, taking with it the embedded hairs.

Step 4

Shave the facial hair. Shaving shears hair flush with the surface of your skin, but often causes what's known as a 5 o'clock shadow. This may not be as appropriate for women as men.

Step 5

Remove hair with an electric razor. Men with more sensitive skin can benefit from an electric razor because hair isn't shorn as tight to the skin as a razor blade, preventing irritation and subsequent inflammation. Like the previous techniques, regular use is necessary to maintain results.

Step 6

Undergo laser hair removal. With this technique, the skin is exposed to laser energy, which damages the underlying follicles and prevents hair growth for almost a year.

Step 7

Schedule electrolysis. Electrolysis uses a fine probe to emit an electrical charge that destroys the follicle and stops the unwanted hair from growing.

Tips and Warnings

  • MayoClinic.com recommends using a shaving gel when removing hair with a razor. It's also important to shave with the grain of your beard to minimize skin irritation and ingrown hair growth.
  • Plucking can be painful and may lead to ingrown hair growth as well as potential scarring. Depilatories can cause skin irritation and chemical burns. Avoid using products formulated for the legs. Like plucking, waxing can be painful and may cause ingrown hair growth.
