A proper putting grip provides the control and distance control you need to swing the putter in that perfect pendulum and put ball in the hole. While the grip can vary depending on the player's skills, knowledge and experience, the beginner should start with conventional putting grip to establish good form, fundamentals and mechanics. More experienced golfers can adjust with different hand and finger positions, overlapping or interlocking, firmer or looser grips, different positions on the club and even unusual and exotic putters to improve their game.
Step 1
Align yourself parallel to the target line between the ball and the hole. Position the club face so that it is squarely aligned to your body and faces the target line.
Step 2
Face your palms toward each other and position the putter evenly between your hands.
Step 3
Grasp the upper portion of the putter grip with your non-dominant hand. Curl your fingers lightly but firmly around the grip with your thumb pointing straight down the flat front portion of the grip. Hold the grip more in your palms than you would for a regular golf stroke.
Step 4
Place your dominant hand lower on the grip. Wrap your fingers around the grip so your ring and little fingers touch the side of your other thumb.
Step 5
Position your dominant thumb so it also points straight down the flat portion on the front of the grip. Overlap the index finger of your non-dominant hand over the fingers of your dominant hand.
Step 6
Keep your elbows in at your sides. Stabilize your wrists on your grip to make your stroke with your arms and shoulders.
