A nanny provides a child with one-on-one attention while making life easier for hard-pressed parents. When both parents work, having a nanny eliminates the need to get the child up in the morning and out of the house. A parent who works at home can have her child close by but give full attention to her job. Having a nanny also keeps the child in his familiar environment and limits his exposure to germs that circulate in schools and day-care centers. It's easy to know why you want to hire a nanny. Choosing the right fit for your family might be a little harder.
Step 1
Outline your needs and preferences for your nanny. Consider whether the nanny will be live-in and if she will be responsible for tasks such as light housecleaning and cooking. Decide what you can afford to pay.
Step 2
Seek out nanny candidates by asking acquaintances for recommendations or going through a nanny agency. Posting a notice on a college campus, in coffee shops and gyms and at other locations is a way to get candidates. Also consider placing a classified advertisement in the newspaper.
Step 3
Conduct interviews with the candidates, asking each potential nanny the same set of questions for a fair analysis. Ask about past child-care experience, relevant schooling and CPR certification to get a basic understanding of her qualifications. Provide specific examples of situations that might occur while she is watching your child and ask her to explain how she would handle the situation.
Step 4
Invite your child into the room to meet each potential nanny. Watch the candidates as they interact with your child. Assess each candidate's level of comfort and confidence.
Step 5
Research each candidate's background by calling references and conducting a criminal background check. Look for red flags, such as a reference who seems hesitant or information that conflicts with what the candidate has told you.
Step 6
Draft an employment contract that spells out all expectations and benefits, such as vacation time, sick time, holidays and health insurance if you are offering it. Consult with a lawyer to ensure that you cover all details.
Step 7
Verify the final candidate's eligibility to work in the United States by completing an I-9 form. Ask for a copy of acceptable identification as outlined on the I-9 form.
Step 8
Select the candidate who best fits your needs. While relying on the interviews and the information that you have gathered, also trust your instincts.
