Teaching an effective golf swing requires commitment. In addition to knowing the nuances of what it takes to swing the club well and make solid contact with the golf ball, you have to understand that the individual on the receiving end of your knowledge may not understand the concepts and lessons easily.

Step 1

Teach the proper stance. The golfer must be lined up with his left shoulder--for a right-handed golfer--facing the green or the target in the fairway where he wants the ball to go. The left foot should be directly underneath the shoulder and both feet should be shoulder-width. The knees should be bent in an athletic position.

Step 2

Exhibit and teach the correct grip. Have the golfer grasp the club with her left hand, about 1/2 inch from the top of the grip. Wrap the fingers around the club with the right thumb going down the shaft of the club. Place the small finger of the right hand in the gap between the middle finger and the forefinger. The right thumb should be placed down the shaft of the club. Grip the club firmly but not too tight. The club should be gripped at a "6" on a scale of one to 10.

Step 3

Sample the backswing and teach it, accordingly. Have the golfer roll his hips to the rear and then have his arms and shoulders follow. The golfer must have his entire body involved, not just his hands and arms. When the golfer has turned as far as he can, his hands should be at shoulder height. The golfer is now in the launch position.

Step 4

Display and teach the downswing. Have the golfer roll her hips toward the ball. Once she has started to move her hips, her shoulders and hands follow. As the club comes to the hitting zone, have the golfer snap her right wrist on impact with the ball. This will help the golfer get maximum distance and accuracy.

Step 5

Teach the follow through. After contact with the ball, the golfer must finish his swing. The hands must continue to come forward until all the weight is on the front leg and the hands are at shoulder height.
