According to the American Academy of Dermatology, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, is a common occurrence after acne lesions heal. Often referred to as acne scars, these dark spots are areas of inflammation left within the skin not an actual form of scarring. Given time, these irregular spots of discoloration will fade once the swelling subsides. But you can use hydroquinone, a skin bleaching agent, to help speed recovery and improve the appearance of your skin.
Step 1
Wash the affected area of skin as well as your hands with soap and water. Before you apply any medication to the postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, your skin should be clean and dry.
Step 2
Apply a cream containing hydroquinone directly onto areas of hyperpigmentation. Use only enough cream to lightly cover the PIH. Hydroquinone is available in both prescription and nonprescription strength.
Step 3
Rub the cream gently into the hyperpigmentation. Continue to rub the cream into the affected areas of the skin until completely absorbed. The hydroquinone slows the production of melanin and should cause the marks to fade.
Step 4
Repeat each day until you see an improvement in hyperpigmentation. If the marks fail to improve, talk to your dermatologist. Another form of treatment may be necessary to improve the appearance of your skin.
