Xopenex is a medication used to treat asthma. Your doctor will prescribe a nebulizer to dispense the medication into your lungs. As with any drug, your doctor will only give you Xopenex if he feels that the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks. Risks of taking Xopenex include allergic reactions and mild to severe side effects.
Allergic Reaction
Rarely, Xopenex may cause an immediate and severe allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the mouth or throat, hives and severe shortness of breath or worsening of asthma symptoms. This type of allergic reaction can be fatal, and it's imperative to seek emergency care immediately. Stop using the nebulizer right away and call your doctor or, if you are having trouble breathing, 911.
Side Effects in Adults
Side effects in adults can range from annoying to severe. If you experience severe or bothersome side effects, or if the side effects get worse over time, you should call your doctor. Common mild side effects include coughing, nausea, rash, sinus troubles, nervousness and tremors. More serious side effects include heart palpitations, worsened asthma symptoms and hives.
Side Effects in Children
Xopenex can affect children differently than adults. If your child experiences side effects from this drug, contact his doctor. In children, Xopenex can cause diarrhea, headaches, muscle pain or weakness, runny nose and sore throat. More severe symptoms, necessitating immediate medical attention, include hives or worsening asthma symptoms.
