There's always something to do in New York City. The Big Apple is a destination for tourists from around the globe with attractions for all age groups. For the health conscious traveler who would like to experience a side of the city not found in the mainstream guidebooks, all it takes is a little digging around for a memorable trip.
Chelsea Piers
No trip to New York is complete for the fitness enthusiast without a day at Chelsea Piers, 28 acres of sports facilities on the renovated historic piers 59, 60, 61 and 62 on the Hudson River. Two indoor ice rinks, a bowling alley, a climbing wall, a spa and state of the art gym are all offered here. Insider tip: if taking a taxi, have the cabbie drop you off inside the complex, otherwise you'll have a walk across the parking lot equivalent to nearly five city blocks.
Food on Foot
There's no doubt about it--New York has some of the best food in the country, and the more off the beaten path you go the more interesting the food gets. Eat like a local with Food on Foot tours, a tour company that offers guided tours on foot and by subway that let you sample some of New York's most varied cuisine. The East Village and International Express tours offer the most culinary diversity, or indulge a specific craving with a more targeted tour offering, such as the NY over Noodles tour available during the winter. As of July 2010, tours start at $49, not including food or subway pass.
Nightriders Sunset Bike Ride
Arguably one of the most beautiful ways of seeing the city, the Nightriders Sunset Bicycle tour is an unforgettable experience. Knowledge guides share New York history and lore as you bike along the Gold Coast waterfront through Liberty State Park. You'll park your bike and watch the sun set behind the Statue of Liberty. Bike rental is included, all for $50 as of July 2010. If night riding is not your thing, a morning tour is offered that includes a ferry ride to Ellis Island and admission to the Statue of Liberty.
New Year's Eve Midnight Run
In New York for the holidays? Skip the Times Square New Year's Eve festivities and opt for a midnight 4-mile run through Central Park instead. The New York Road Runners throw this event every year, with DJ dancing at 10 p.m. and a race at midnight. This is a zany event, so don a costume if you'd like and ring in the New Year with other running aficionados.
Yi pak Spa
Every vacation should include a little relaxation. Forego the regular spa experience and try an authentic Korean Spa. Massages, scrubs, wet and dry saunas and heated jade tile floors are offered at the Yi pak Spa in Midtown Manhattan between 5th Avenue and Broadway. There are separate spas for men and women.
