At some point, you may want or even need to change the handlebar grips on your bicycle. Over time, your grips will wear out from usual wear and tear. Perhaps your current grips were the unfortunate casualties of a recent a fall. Or maybe you just want to try a new type of grip. There's no need to take your bike to the shop to have the grips replaced. With the right equipment and some rubbing alcohol, you can replace your handlebar grips quickly and easily in a matter of minutes.

Step 1

Unscrew the brake lever clamps on both sides of the handlebars with the Allen wrench. Push the brake levers down the handlebars and away from the grips.

Step 2

Place the tip of the screwdriver under the edge of the grip and lift slightly. Pour a little rubbing alcohol into the opening. Allow the alcohol to penetrate between the grip and handlebars for about a minute. Repeat this step on the other grip.

Step 3

Twist the grips repeatedly to loosen the grip from the handlebars. Continue to twist the grips and pull them away from the handlebars until they slip off. Clean the handlebars thoroughly with a towel.

Step 4

Hold one of the new grips up and pour some rubbing alcohol into the open end so the inside is completely wet, but not soaked. Immediately slip the grip on the handlebar and align the grip properly. Repeat this step with the other grip.

Step 5

Place the brake levers back in position. Tighten the brake lever clamps.
