Facial blushing usually results from a feeling of embarrassment. However, blushing itself can be embarrassing. A rush of blood flowing to the capillaries and vessels in your face can appear in an instant, particularly if you have fair skin. This is primarily a psychological issue, but there are some home remedies that can have a positive effect on both physical and mental causes of facial blushing.

Step 1

Try various methods of relaxation to reduce facial blushing. If the blushing is caused by social phobia or anxiety, a study conducted by the University of Ottowa and published in the October 2007 issue of the "Behaviour Research and Therapy" journal found that mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques can calm anxious feelings. Therapies such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga resulted in study patients scoring lower on social anxiety tests over the course of eight weeks.

Step 2

Attempt cognitive therapy to get to the root of the psychological problem. This approach is based on talking out your feelings and identifying what causes your facial blushing. Once you learn the origin of the problem, you will be better able to process these feelings and modify the reaction to a situation.

Step 3

Build up your self-esteem and reduce self-consciousness. Facial blushing is often the result of feelings of shame and embarrassment. This can be decreased by "creating a pillar of success," as stated in a "Psychology Today" article. Form deeper connections with family and friends, strengthen your career and take on projects of interest to increase your level of self-esteem. This will directly result in fewer facial blushes.

Step 4

Avoid spicy foods that can cause facial blushing. These foods cause instant heating effects internally which result in a rush of blood to the face.
