The Best Fishing Spots for Bluegill in Central California

Fishing is part of the active, healthy lifestyle; it allows you to get in the open air and have the opportunity to eat what you catch. Bluegills are small, common fish throughout the freshwaters of the United States. Central California is replete with fishing lakes that are prime breeding grounds for bluegill. Having information on lakes in Central California with high levels of bluegill will help you find the right locale for your fishing needs.

License

In order to fish in the state of California, you must have a valid fishing license. Children under the age of 16 are exempt from needing a license. A boating license is required to operate any motorized watercraft; they can be obtained from the Department of Fish and Game.

San Pedro Reservoir

Don Pedro Reservoir is a fertile fishing lake in Central California, about an hour outside of San Francisco. Bluegill are especially fertile in the shallow, murky sections of the lake. Constructed by damming several tributaries and rivers that flow out to the San Francisco Bay, the fertile fishing waters are also a haven for rainbow and brook trout, salmon, black bass, and crappie.

Lake Nacimiento

Located in Monterey County in Central California, Lake Nacimiento consists of over 5,000 surface acres of water. Although not prevalent in the deeper parts of the lake, the shallow banks of the natural lake is teeming with bluegill fish and other types of sunfish. Large bluegills in Lake Nacimiento are found in medium depths of water of 20 feet or more. Other common fish found in the lake include white bass, rainbow trout, and crappies.

Lake McClure

Lake McClure is a prime bluegill fishing lake located outside of La Grange, California. Situated in Central California, the lake is restocked by state wilderness officials, maintaining its renowned fertile waters. Aside from bluegill fishing, one of the most commonly caught fish in the lake, there is a plethora of other fish in the lake, including spotted bass, black bass, rainbow trout, king salmon, crappie, and catfish.

Pine Flat Lake

Pine Flat Lake is located just inside the Kings Canyon National Park, less than 25 miles away from Fresno, California. Along the murky banks of the lake, bluegills live in great numbers. The deeper parts of the lake are prime for catfish, largemouth bass, salmon, and rainbow trout. Pine Flat Lake Marina offers boat rentals for fishing in the deeper parts of the lake.
