If you swim regularly, wearing a swim cap is a critical part of your workout. Not only does a swim cap protect your hair from the chemicals in the pool water, but it also keeps the hair out of your eyes, enabling a safe swim. Putting on a swim cap requires some practice, but if you do it regularly, you'll soon get the hang of flipping a cap for yourself or your child.
Step 1
Secure your hair at the crown of your head with a fabric pony-tail holder. If your hair is short, pull the front of the hair away from your eyes to avoid having the hair catch just at the top of your vision. A fabric pony-tail holder is easier to remove when wet than a rubber band or elastic. Never use bobby pins because they can puncture your cap.
Step 2
Hold the front of your cap at the top of your forehead, just below the hairline with one hand.
Step 3
Lean forward from the waist to get your hair off your neck, if it's short or to position any wisps away from your neck or sides of your head.
Step 4
Pull the cap quickly up and over your head. Release the cap at the base of your hairline at the top of your neck.
Step 5
Tuck any wisps to avoid having issues with your peripheral vision in the pool.
Tips and Warnings
- If you're racing, you can secure your goggles prior to flipping your cap to avoid the drag of the goggles on top of your cap. Once you've practiced this maneuver for a few swims, try placing the cap at your hairline and using both hands to flip your cap to avoid any issues with having the cap askew.
