While there are no foods that can cure cancer, there are several foods that have been shown in scientific studies to help reduce the likelihood of developing cancer. These foods are all natural, and will contribute to overall good health if eaten in significant quantities on a regular basis. The National Cancer Institute estimates that about one out of three cancer deaths are the result of a poor diet.

Green Tea

Green tea is packed with an antioxidant called polyphenols. These are believed to stop cancer cells from dividing. Green tea has been shown to lower the risk of cancer in the stomach, lungs, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas. Black tea also contains polyphenols, but in much lower concentrations than green tea.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is also loaded with polyphenols. It has been specifically cited as a preventative measure against colon cancer. Olive oil also contains omega-3 fatty acids. These are the so-called "good fats" that contribute to heart health.

Red Wine

Red wine is another well-known source of polyphenols. All red grapes have them, but they are found in greater quantities in red wine. The danger of drinking red wine to help prevent cancer is the alcohol it contains. Heavy alcohol consumption can facilitate cancer. Women should consume no more than one 5-oz. glass of red wine per day. Men should consume no more than two 5-oz. glasses per day.

Soy

Foods containing soy have phytoestrogens. These are nonsteroidal estrogens believed to help prevent breast and prostate cancer. They do this by apparently slowing down the spread of cancer cells. It is important to eat soy products, such as tofu and soy milk, in moderation. Up to 5 oz. per day is recommended. More than that can cause a hormone imbalance, because of the estrogen in soy.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich with the antioxidant lycopene. These fight the free radicals in the body that can start cancer growth. Tomatoes contain large amounts of vitamin C, which shields cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes are believed to help prevent breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer. Tomatoes can be consumed in any form, including tomato-based pasta sauce, pizza sauce, salsa and even ketchup.
