Women can experience hair loss from a variety of factors, ranging from harsh styling techniques to chemical treatments, such as hair coloring or perms and age. No matter the cause of hair loss, it can be devastating, affecting your social life and personal relationships. There are certain supplements to aid in hair growth so you can restore your self-confidence and relationships. Before starting any supplement regimen on your own, consult with your physician to ensure there will be no interactions with current medications and what he would recommend for you.

B-Complex Vitamins

B-complex vitamins effectively help hair grow, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The body does not store B-complex vitamins because they are water-soluble which means you need to take them every day. B-complex vitamins help maintain healthy hair, skin and nails. Biotin, one of the B-complex vitamins, has been used in the past to treat hair loss in both children and adults, according to the experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Women need 30 mcg of biotin every day while breastfeeding women need 35 mcg per day. Teenage females need 25 mcg of biotin per day.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Omega-6 fatty acids help stimulate hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Your diet requires a balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to be completely balanced. Omega-3 fatty acids aid in inflammation while some Omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation, according to the UMMC. Your body obtains most of its Omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable oil that you may consume, such as linoleic acid. However, if you do not consume enough vegetable oil in your diet, there are Omega-6 supplemental oils. Omega-6 supplemental oils include evening primrose, black current and spirulina. One to two capsules per day is what the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends for hair loss.

Other Vitamins and Minerals

Women can also experience hair loss during pregnancy or after birth, according to American Pregnancy. Experts at American Pregnancy recommend biotin as previously mentioned but also recommends Vitamin C and zinc to aid in hair growth. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking between 500 to 1,000 mg of Vitamin C twice per day, but again, check with your physician. A good multivitamin will contain enough zinc for your daily allowance, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
