Designed to go with bindings and skis, ski boots are not comfortable for walking. Unlike snowboard boots, they have minimal flex. Made from hard plastic and sized to fit tightly, ski boots have little extra room for your feet, which would make walking easier. You will inevitably have to walk some distance in your ski boots at some point, and it will not be a very happy experience unless you know how to make the task more bearable and less painful.
Step 1
Detach your boots from the bindings on your skis by pressing your ski pole on the back latch of the bindings. Lift each boot out of its binding.
Step 2
Unlock the top latches on your ski boots to reduce pressure on the shin. According to the Skis.com buying guide, detaching the top latch allows you to walk more comfortably because it gives you more flexibility.
Step 3
Get comfortable with the twisting. According to sports instructor Jack Heggie, walking in ski boots requires you to twist your hips as you take steps. He states, "The pelvis twists about a vertical axis in such a way that the right hip moves forward while the left hip moves back."
Step 4
Move your shoulder back on the side you step. When the right foot steps forward, move your right shoulder backward. Then do the same with the left side.
Tips and Warnings
- Always detach the top latches. Be cognizant of other people when you walk because your stability is not optimal.
- Detaching lower latches on the boot can decreases stability and can cause ankle injuries. Walking in the wrong size ski boots can cause foot pain.
