Multiple conditions cause dry or brittle hair. Overuse of heated styling appliances, swimming in chlorinated pool water, environmental conditions and hereditary factors all play a part in the condition of your hair. Luckily, you don't have to suffer from dry hair for the rest of your life. Taking extra care of your tresses is the key to reviving dull, dry hair and keeping your hair healthy and soft.
Step 1
Condition your hair with a deep conditioning treatment twice weekly. According to Roberta Wilson in her book "Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty," you can add hair-reviving, conditioning essential oils to your regular deep conditioner for extra shine and vibrancy. Try using a few drops of cedarwood, chamomile or clary sage essential oil the next time you condition your hair.
Step 2
Style your hair as gently as you can. According to Zoe Diana Draelos in her book "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," dry hair should be handled as gently as possibleto minimize breakage.
Step 3
Use cloth-covered hair bands and plastic-covered hair clips. Metal hair clips and rubber bands can cause further damage and breakage.
Step 4
Avoid heated styling appliances because they cause moisture loss and damage the hair shaft. If you must use a hair dryer, use it on the lowest heat setting possible. Don't use flat irons without first applying a protective spray intended for use with heated styling products.
Step 5
Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo formulated especially for dry hair. According to Amy J. McMichael and Maria K. Hordinsky in their book "Hair and Scalp Diseases: Medical, Surgical, and Cosmetic Treatments," dry hair shampoos provide mild cleansing and extra conditioning. Try shampooing your hair every other day. This will help reduce moisture loss and dryness in your scalp and hair.
Step 6
Use alcohol-free styling products. Products containing alcohol, such as hairspray or styling gel, will dry out your hair and make it more brittle. Brittle hair will break more easily, causing more split ends. You can find alcohol-free products in most drugstores.
