Athletes start with the same healthy diet that all people should eat. Food in certain nutrition groups will need to be increased in relation to the level of activity and stress on the body. Extra carbohydrates will help endurance training and extra protein will help repair muscles for a quicker recovery so the athlete can get back to training. Hydration is essential to athletic performance and water should be consumed before, during and after training and competition.
