The Sport Fitness Advisor states that basketball players are great athletes because they have speed, agility, endurance and strength. A commitment to training is required to build the stamina needed to run and play at high intensity and with little rest in a game. Serious basketball players combine intense speed and agility training to significantly improve their game. Drills and exercises are performed relentlessly to prepare a player to excel.

Speed and Agility

According to a 1994 article in the "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research," most Division I basketball players can run a 40-yard speed test in 5 seconds. Speed is important for a basketball player because the sport involves running fast down the court and moving quickly. Agility training will help you increase your speed as well as improve the important basketball skill of changing direction while running at full speed.

Strength

Building strength to help your body be competitive in basketball's very physical game involves lifting weights and using strength-training equipment. The Sports Fitness Advisor states that basketball players should train for explosive power that requires more than only lifting heavy weights. Strength builds endurance during play.

Flexibility

Stretching is beneficial if you are a basketball player because it can help your range of motion and joints healthy. Serious basketball training involves strenuous use of your joints and muscles. Keeping joints and muscles flexible and stretched helps with performance and recovery.

Team

Basketball is a team sport. To take your basketball game to the highest level requires a great deal of individual work in addition to the team practice. The ability to play as a united team helps you achieve the opportunity to win games.

Personal Trainers

Ideafit.com states that today kids are concentrating on only one sport instead of playing multiple sports as their parents and grandparents did. The goal to achieve excellence is strong even in young athletes. Personal trainers are hired from a young age for the very serious athletes. College and professional players often use them. Personal trainers help the individual basketball player to play at a more competitive level.

Nutrition

Adopting a good nutrition program to support intense basketball training and performance is recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Athletes start with the same healthy diet that all people should eat. Food in certain nutrition groups will need to be increased in relation to the level of activity and stress on the body. Extra carbohydrates will help endurance training and extra protein will help repair muscles for a quicker recovery so the athlete can get back to training. Hydration is essential to athletic performance and water should be consumed before, during and after training and competition.
