According to the American Dental Hygienists' Association, your toothbrush may be home to thousands of viruses and bacteria, some of which can cause cold sores, rhinitis and periodontal infections. You should replace your toothbrush every two to three months and after you've been sick. Some people also choose to sanitize toothbrushes to reduce the risk of illness. It's not necessary to purchase a toothbrush sanitizer. You can sanitize your toothbrush using common household items.

Step 1

Rinse your toothbrush well under running water after you finish brushing your teeth. Run your fingers over the bristles to remove any crumbs or debris left behind.

Step 2

Soak your toothbrush in a cup of antibacterial mouthwash overnight. In the morning, pour out the mouthwash and rinse your toothbrush.

Step 3

Store your toothbrush in a clean toothbrush holder or cup, with the bristles facing up. Help protect it from germs by storing it in a closed cabinet or using a plastic cover to protect the head of the toothbrush.

Step 4

Once a week, wash your toothbrush on the top rack of your dishwasher. If you don't have a dishwasher, microwave your toothbrush for 10 to 15 seconds.

Things You'll Need

  • Antibacterial mouthwash
  • Small cup or glass
