How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy Test

A colonoscopy is a test that can be used to diagnose bleeding in the stools, digestive issues or as a preventative measure to check for colon cancer. The test involves inserting a small camera into the rectum, by way of a thin tube. In order to see a clear picture of the colon, the area must be clear of solid matter. Preparing for a colonoscopy involves cleansing the colon prior to the test.

Step 1

Discuss medication use with your doctor at least one week before your colonoscopy is scheduled. Some drugs you may normally take for ongoing health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes can interfere with a colonoscopy or pose risks to your health. Your doctor will determine whether you need to temporarily taper off your medications or if you can continue on a regular dosing schedule.

Step 2

Receive specific instructions pertaining to the foods you can eat while preparing for the test. The timing of the transition from solid foods to clear liquids will depend on what time your colonoscopy is scheduled. Clear liquids such as tea, water, clear juices and gelatin products are usually approved for consumption on the day before your colonoscopy. Red beverages and gelatin should not be eaten, as the coloring can impede a clear view of the colon.

Step 3

Take a laxative the day or evening before your colonoscopy to begin the cleansing process. Your doctor will let you know what type of laxative you should take. Some enema kits contain a liquid laxative that is to be taken in preparation for a colonoscopy. Drink plenty of plain water after you take the laxative to counteract the fluid loss you will experience while you empty your colon.

Step 4

Perform an enema several hours prior to your colonoscopy, if directed by your doctor. Some doctors require patients to use an enema, while others may not. An enema is administered through the rectum and will cause you to expel more waste that may hamper a clear view of the colon. You may need assistance from a spouse or other family member for this preparatory step.
