Infant swimming lessons can save your infant's life, according to the Infant Swimming Resource Center. Kids Health reports that almost 1,000 kids drown each year. It's the second most common cause of death for children in the United States. Infants and toddlers who are taught to navigate the water at an early age are able to stop themselves from drowning using safety swimming, water movement and turning techniques, so infant swim lessons are also recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. You should start looking for swimming lessons when your baby is about 6 months old.

Step 1

Enter your zip code into the instructor locator search box at the official Infant Swim Resource website to find a trained and licensed infant swim instructor in your area.

Step 2

Ask your gym or community center to expand their repertoire to include infant swim safety and infant swim lessons. They might be able to locate and hire an instructor if you can find enough interested parents to demonstrate high demand.

Step 3

Ask for recommendations from other parents at play times, pre-schools and family outings.

Step 4

Look for babies that can swim when you go to the water park, pool or beach and strike up a conversation with their caretakers to find out where they learned to swim.

Step 5

Ask representatives from your county or state's department of health. Ask fire departments and boating safety offices whether they offer water safety and infant swimming lessons or can offer you a referral.

Step 6

Hire a local swimming coach or infant swimming professional with infant swimming experience to come to your house and teach a class to you and your friends in your own pool or a community pool.

Step 7

Call high schools and colleges and ask for the swimming coach or swimming department. Ask them for referrals to reputable swim instructors.

Step 8

Call every pool in a reasonable driving distance and inquire about infant swim lessons.
