How to Find My Perfect Weight

A health-care worker can determine your ideal weight from a physical examination that takes a variety of factors into account. You can also find the range for your ideal weight from your gender and height. Dr. Stephen B. Halls provides the normal ranges of the body mass index, or BMI, of each gender. You may then use this BMI range to calculate the ideal weight range for a given height.

Weight Range for Women

Step 1

Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Assume you're 63 inches tall for this example.

Step 2

Convert the normal BMI range from metric units to English units by dividing by 703. The normal BMI range for women is 19.1 to 25.8 kg/m^2, according to Dr. Stephen B. Halls. This is equal to a range of 0.0272 lb/in^2 to 0.0367 lb/in^2.

Step 3

Derive an equation that expresses your ideal weight range in terms of height. Your BMI is [Weight / (Height x Height)] by definition, so Weight = Height x Height x BMI. Substitute the BMI values from step 2 to show that your ideal weight range is between [Height x Height x 0.0272] pounds and [Height x Height x 0.0367] pounds.

Step 4

Calculate your ideal weight range for your height of 63 inches. Your minimum weight is [Height x Height x 0.0272] = [63 x 63 x 0.0272] = 108 lbs. Your maximum weight is [Height x Height x 0.0367] = [63 x 63 x 0.0367] = 146 lbs.

Weight Range for Men

Step 1

Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Assume you're 69 inches tall for this example.

Step 2

Convert the normal BMI range from metric units to English units by dividing by 703. The normal BMI range for men is 20.7 to 26.4 kg/m^2, according to Dr. Stephen B. Halls. This is equal to a range of 0.0294 lb/in^2 to 0.0376 lb/in^2.

Step 3

Derive an equation that expresses your ideal weight range in terms of height. Your BMI is [Weight / (Height x Height)] by definition, so Weight = Height x Height x BMI. Substitute the BMI values from step 2 to show that your ideal weight range is between [Height x Height x 0.0294] pounds and [Height x Height x 0.0376] pounds.

Step 4

Calculate your ideal weight range for your height of 69 inches. Your minimum weight is [Height x Height x 0.0294] = [69 x 69 x 0.0294] = 140 lbs. Your maximum weight is [Height x Height x 0.0376] = [69 x 69 x 0.0376] = 179 lbs.
