Facial hair can be an embarrassing problem for women, but it's extremely common and you can remove it quickly and discreetly be learning how to wax at home. While you'll probably feel a sting when you wax your facial hair, a few basic supplies and some careful preparation will make the process smoother and less painful. To minimize mistakes, read through all the steps before you begin. You'll become faster and more skilled with every waxing session.

Preparation

Step 1

Choose a wax designed to be used on the face.

Step 2

Pull your hair back into a tight style so it can't slip into the wax on your face.

Step 3

Wash your face with soap and water and let dry completely, leaving skin free of any lotions or makeup.

Step 4

Dust the skin with a light layer of pre-wax powder or baby powder to absorb excess oil and prepare the skin for waxing.

Step 5

Warm the wax according to the package directions and let sit until it's cool enough to be comfortable on your skin; it should have a thick, honey-like consistency.

Upper Lip

Step 1

Dip the small wooden waxing spatula into the wax and apply an even layer of wax to one half of the upper lip, moving in the direction of hair growth, from under your nose to outside your lip; use a bit more wax at the end of your mouth than under your nose, since the added thickness will make the wax easier to pull up.

Step 2

Press a cloth strip firmly to the wax and rub your finger back and forth over it; wait about 10 seconds so the wax can adhere.

Step 3

Open your mouth and pull your top lip over your teeth; position the thumb and forefinger of your non-pulling hand on either side of the cloth strip to keep the skin taut. Quickly pull the strip away from the skin, moving against the direction of hair growth and pulling the cloth parallel to the skin. Apply pressure immediately to the skin with your fingers to minimize the pain.

Step 4

Scrape the excess wax off the spatula and dip it into the wax container again, following the same procedure for the other half of the lip.

Eyebrows

Step 1

Dip the small waxing spatula into the wax and scrape it against the container to remove any excess.

Step 2

Look at yourself closely in the mirror. Very carefully coat the unwanted hairs with an even layer of wax, moving in the same direction the hair grows.

Step 3

Press a cloth strip firmly and evenly to the wax, rubbing with your fingertips to achieve a smooth hold; give the wax about 10 seconds to adhere.

Step 4

Hold the skin taut by placing the thumb and forefinger of the non-pulling hand on either side of the cloth. Quickly pull the strip away by moving against the direction of hair growth, keeping your hand moving parallel to the skin. Press on the skin with your fingers immediately to minimize the discomfort.

Chin

Step 1

Dip the medium-size waxing spatula into the wax and scrape against the side of the container to remove any excess.

Step 2

Tip your head back to create a smooth, taut surface for waxing and apply an even layer of wax to the skin, moving in the direction the hair grows; check in the mirror to make sure all hair is covered.

Step 3

Press a cloth strip to the wax, using the heel of your hand to smooth it out, and wait about 10 seconds so the wax can fully adhere.

Step 4

Pull the cloth strip back quickly, going against the direction of hair growth and keeping your hand close to the skin as you move parallel. Apply pressure to the skin immediately with your hand to minimize the pain.

Tips and Warnings

  • Certain waxes, such as hard wax, are designed to be used without cloth strips, so make sure you read the package directions and understand what type of wax you're using. Clean up any bits of wax left on your skin by rubbing with a cotton ball dipped in olive oil or baby oil. Swipe just-waxed areas with alcohol-free toner to soothe skin and prevent ingrown hair.
  • Waxing can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so always wear sunscreen after waxing. Never wax the same section of skin more than once in a session. Instead, clean up any left-behind hairs with tweezers.
