Goldenseal is a flowering herb native to North America and grows wild throughout the northern United States. It has been used in natural and folk medicine for centuries. Today it is used by herbalists to treat a variety of conditions, including colds, digestive disorders and skin irritation. Though time honored, most herbs have not yet been approved by the FDA and should be used only after consulting a health care professional.

Goldenseal Capsules

Herb capsules can be made from the dried herb or herb extract. Goldenseal capsules are used to treat infectious diseases internally. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the herb has the ability to kill many types of bacteria and parasites, including candida, which causes yeast infections, tapeworms, dysentery and malaria. It is often combined with echinacea to treat colds and upper respiratory infections. It is also used by herbalists to treat fevers, sinus infections, diarrhea, ulcers, cirrhosis of the liver and cancer. As with any natural therapy, it is important to consult a health care practitioner before using goldenseal herbs for medicinal purposes.

Goldenseal Tincture

An herbal tincture is prepared much like a liquid extract, using either alcohol or glycerin to extract the main chemical constituents of the plant. A tincture of goldenseal can be taken internally by adding it to juice or water, or it may be added to topical preparations such as lotion or cream. Goldenseal is used topically to treat a number of skin conditions.

According to a study published in "Oxford Journals" in 2006, berberine, the main component of goldenseal, may be effective in inhibiting the growth of certain types of skin cancer. Although more studies are needed to confirm berberine's effects on skin cancer, researchers noted that using standard sunblock alone may not be enough to prevent cancer. Goldenseal is also used by herbalists as a topical disinfectant and eyewash.

Goldenseal Tea

Medicinal herbal teas are much more potent than standard herbal tea bags. Goldenseal tea is made from an infusion of the root of the plant. It is bitter tasting, but can be combined with peppermint or other flavorful herbs to enhance the taste. The herbal tea can be taken internally to treat infections, or used in a douche to treat vaginitis. Goldenseal herb tea is sometimes used to treat colds, the flu, sinusitis and seasonal allergies. It may also help to soothe a sore throat. The Clayton College herb guide does note that high doses of goldenseal may cause low blood sugar and should not be used by hyperglycemics or pregnant women. Herbs and other natural therapies should be used in conjunction with and not in place of conventional medical care.
