Homemade Cocoa Butter Lotion

Soothe and moisturize your skin with cocoa butter lotion. Skin-care specialists prize oil of theobroma, the other name for cocoa butter, for its ability to restore your skin to supple, soft health. While you can buy cocoa butter lotion, a few minutes at your stove and some easy-to-find ingredients are all you need to make your own homemade version.

Step 1

Grate or chop 4 tbsp. of beeswax and 4 tbsp. of cocoa butter into granular pieces for easy melting.

Step 2

Heat the beeswax and cocoa butter just enough to melt them on your stove in a double boiler. High heat is not necessary. The cocoa butter melts at body temperature while the beeswax requires a bit more heat.

Step 3

Add 4 tbsp. of almond oil as soon as your first two ingredients are liquefied and thoroughly mixed. Blend the mixture together until it is smooth.

Step 4

Pour your lotion into a jar with a top that you can secure. Allow the mixture to cool and firm at room temperature before use.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can scale up your recipe to make a larger batch as long as the proportion of all three ingredients remains the same. Cocoa butter sometimes contains fine sediment that will float to the top when you melt the cocoa butter. Strain the melted butter through muslin or a fine sieve to remove it.
