The Carolina rig with a plastic grub is an effective setup for fishing the beach. The rig consists of a trailing leader and hook, a swivel that connects the line and leader, and a sinker above the swivel. An egg-shape, sliding sinker is preferred for cast and retrieve, and a pyramid sinker is best for still fishing in sandy bottom areas. A spinning or conventional reel with monofilament line and a medium class rod are ample for many species of surf fish.

Rigging for Cast and Retrieve

Step 1

Thread the monofilament through the rod guides and leave 4 feet of free line past the rod tip. Slip the sliding sinker on the end of the line. Tie the barrel swivel on the end of the line using a 5-twist clinch knot. Cut the tag end about 1/8 inch from the knot. Let the sinker rest atop the swivel.

Step 2

Cut a length of fluorocarbon leader about 3 feet long and tie it to the opposite end of the barrel swivel using a 7-twist clinch knot. Cut the tag end 1/8 inch from the knot. Tie the hook on the end of the leader using a 7-twist clinch knot. Cut the tag end.

Step 3

Push the point of the hook into the end of a plastic grub, and slide the grub onto the shank until it is snug against the hook eye. Turn the reel handle until the sinker is about 2 inches from the rod tip. Cast the grub just beyond the white-water foam and let it settle on the bottom.

Step 4

Hold the rod horizontal with the tip to one side and begin a slow retrieve. When you feel a strike, bring the rod tip up and begin winding. Use the surge from the surf to help land the fish.

Step 5

Remove the hook with long-nose pliers and check the bait before making another cast. Use a new piece if necessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • Adjust the reel drag so you can pull line off the spool with medium effort. Use different color grubs until one produces a strike. Rig a pyramid sinker using a snap swivel, and connect the line and leader to the swivel eye.
  • Secure the hook in a rod guide when carrying the rod from one place to another.
