Dust mites are tiny microscopic creatures that live in most homes. Thankfully, they are not parasitic and don't bite or burrow into human skin. They do, however, feed off of dead skin cells. Dust mites can create allergies for humans due to the waste products they produce.
They are commonly found in and on mattresses and pillows because dead skin cells frequently slough off onto those items. The size of dust mites prohibits us from actually seeing them, but their allergic effects are evident in sensitive individuals. Removing dust mites from the skin is a simple process, although prevention plays an important role to deter their return.
Step 1
Remove dust mites from the skin by using a damp rag to wipe over the skin, or simply take a shower. Because dust mites do not bite or burrow into the skin, they are easy to remove.
Step 2
Vacuum your mattress and pillows thoroughly and wash bedding in hot water at least every two weeks. This will eliminate the dust mites from getting on your skin when you lie in bed.
Step 3
Eliminate the environment in which dust mites thrive by reducing the temperature and humidity level of your home. A temperature of less than 70 degrees and humidity level of less than 50 percent will eliminate the breeding grounds and homes of dust mites, drastically eliminating the number of dust mites that can come in contact with your skin.
Step 4
Use an air purifier to pull dust mites out of the air. HEPA filters are the filters of choice for eliminating dust mites and decreasing the allergic reaction they can cause humans.
