Triptans are a popular drug used for the relief of migraine pain and symptoms. These drugs are available in many brand names, such as Imitrex, Maxalt, Relpax, Amerge, Zomig, Axert and Frova, and are used to treat acute pain. Triptans may also be effective for relieving nausea and sensitivity to light, sound and motion that frequently occurs with migraine headaches. These medications can be taken with other medications, like ibuprofen and other over-the-counter drugs; however, serious reactions could occur with the use of some depression medications, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Step 1
Check with your doctor to be sure triptans are safe for use. According to the Mayo Clinic, triptan medications may not be appropriate for everyone. Those with heart disease, history of stroke or high blood pressure should not take triptans, as the heart-related risks could be harmful. In addition, according to Consumer Health Reports, triptans should be prescribed with caution to those who are severely overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol or diabetes.
Step 2
Take at the first sign of pain. According to Consumer Health Reports, complete relief is not common, but taking a triptan early on will increase the effectiveness of the medication and will better reduce other symptoms.
Step 3
Rest if possible to avoid nausea or vomiting. If severe nausea occurs, oral medications may not be appropriate. Nasal spray and injection formulas are an option in some cases, as well as nausea medications such as anti-metoclopramide or prochlorperazine (which may be taken in conjunction with the triptans).
Step 4
Determine the length of time in which the triptan becomes effective. According to Consumer Health Reports, approximately 60 percent of people who take triptans experience relief within two hours. The Mayo Clinic suggests keeping a headache diary. Keeping track of the foods eaten, occurrence of migraines and results of medication may help you identify triggers, evaluate medication and, ultimately, better manage your migraines.
Step 5
Talk to your doctor about any side effects you may have experienced. Common side effects are nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness and feeling of warmth or coldness. Less common side effects include an allergic reaction, rapid heart beat and chest tightness or pressure. In addition, frequent use or high doses of triptans can cause rebound headaches.Tell your doctor if you begin experiencing more headaches or if the medication becomes ineffective.
