The inability to pay attention in children and in adults is sometimes diagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). If combined with a high level of hyperactivity, the clinical term is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Many of the symptoms of ADD mimic typical behavior in children. When obtaining a diagnosis, it is important to understand the different signs of ADD.

Easily Distracted

As the name of the disorder indicates, attention is one of the primary problems with ADD. It is normal for young children to have short attention spans. However, according to Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD), current diagnostic criteria stipulates that symptoms be present for at least six months and be obvious by the age of seven.

Impulsiveness

Self-control and impulsive behavior are common signs of ADD. Blurting out answers or not being able to wait to be called upon, intruding on other conversations are all symptoms of impulsiveness in ADD. People with impulsive behavior tend to also exhibit moodiness or extreme emotional behavior and appear to be disrespectful or needy.

Additional Criteria

The American Psychiatric Association uses a diagnostic assessment called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV) TR, for ADD. To be considered as diagnosis of ADD, a person should have six out of the nine criteria of the DSM-IV TR. In addition to impulsiveness and distraction, symptoms include inability or desire to do work that requires sustained concentration, frequently misplaces items, forgetfulness, appears not to listen, organizational problems, does not finish tasks or makes careless mistakes.

Additional Considerations

In addition to symptoms that are considered problems associated with ADD, people with attention deficit problems exhibit positive traits that, when encouraged, help develop into successful characteristics. People with ADD and ADHD tend to be high-energy, creative individuals with a strong drive to succeed. They also have the ability to consider a lot of ideas at once and are spontaneous and enthusiastic.
