Anyone who has ever shaved, whether it is the face, legs or bikini area, has most likely noticed the little red bumps that appear the next day. Called razor bumps by many, these irritating spots are the result of ingrown hairs. Ingrown hair bumps can become a more serious medical matter called pseudofolliculitis barbae. It is important to note that the condition will only occur if many of the hair follicles become irritated at once. In most cases, home care can get rid of ingrown hair bumps without the need for medical attention.

Step 1

Apply a warm compress to the area of the body in which you have developed ingrown hair bumps. The bumps are the body's inflammatory reaction to the hair growing back down into the follicle. The compress softens the skin to make the hair removal process more comfortable and effective.

Step 2

Remove the ingrown hair so that the bumps can heal. Sterilize a pair of fine tweezers with rubbing alcohol and gently pull the offending hair out by its root.

Step 3

Encourage healing of the razor bumps by covering the irritated area with a topical antibiotic or anti-inflammatory cream that contains hydrocortisone or benzoyl peroxide. Use in small amounts to be sure that the ointment will not be more irritating to the already-damaged skin.

Step 4

Give the irritated spots some time to heal before shaving again and creating more bumps. People who have especially sensitive skin may choose to use other forms of hair removal, such as depilatory creams or wax treatments, that do not produce stubble.

Things You'll Need

  • Warm compress
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Tweezers
  • Hydrocortisone cream
