Most men enjoy the refreshing feel and masculine scent of a splash of aftershave, but that's only beginning, says HealthGuidance. An effective aftershave contains an antiseptic which prevents infection caused by cuts and nicks, along with a moisturizer that will sooth and soften freshly-shaved skin. Although the stores offer a variety of commercial aftershaves, it isn't difficult to make your own great-smelling, chemical-free aftershave at home.

Step 1

Place 1/4 cup witch hazel in a glass jar. Add 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup distilled water and 1 tbsp. olive oil or sweet almond oil.

Step 2

Add 1/2 cup dried herbs of your choice. Herbs with a masculine scent include mint, sage or rosemary. Use any combination of herbs. Alternatively, add 30 drops of essential oils such as cedar, eucalyptus, bergamot, juniper, clove or cinnamon. Use essential oils instead of, or in addition to the dried herbs. Cover the jar with a tightly-fitting lid.

Step 3

Place the aftershave in a dark, cool place and allow the herbs to steep for two to three weeks. Shake the mixture once or twice every day.

Step 4

Line a fine mesh strainer with clean cheesecloth. Strain the aftershave into a mixing bowl, and then pour the aftershave into a plastic container or spray bottle.
