Home Remedies for Treating Scabies

When tiny mites burrow underneath human skin, the result is a condition called scabies. The fist sign of scabies is a terrible itch in areas of the body that have been infested with the mites. Scratching can cause open sores which, in turn, yield a pathway to bacteria and a resulting infection. Scabies is also contagious, and a re-infestation in the same person is common. Aside from drug therapy, there are some home remedies believed to be successful in curing the condition.

Step 1

Grind the dried neem leaves into a powder. This can be best accomplished with a mortar and pestle but you can put the leaves into a sieve placed over a bowl and use your fingers to mash the leaves through the holes to yield a fine powder.

Step 2

Mix 2 tsp. of the neem with 2 tsp. turmeric powder. Add 1 tsp. coconut oil to make a paste.

Step 3

Test a small amount of the paste on a dime-sized area of affected skin. Wait 1 hour to make sure there is no allergic reaction.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of the paste over all affected areas. Allow to dry for 1 hour.

Step 5

Bathe in lukewarm water using a mild soap. Do not exfoliate or in any way scrub the skin. Gently wash away the paste with a soft, wet cloth with the soap. Add 1 cup of oatmeal to your bath to help alleviate itching.

Step 6

Repeat applications of the neem-tumeric paste each day until the scabies condition is fully healed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase neem leaves from health and vitamin stores. Dried leaves are best, but if you can only find them already powered this will work as well. Wash all linens and clothing that have come in contact with an infected person. Use hot water and add 1 tbsp. of liquid disinfectant to each wash load. This action will help prevent re-infestation and the spread of scabies. Vacuum daily to help remove mites and their waste from carpeting. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables while treating a scabies outbreak. The nutrients from the goods should help speed the healing process.
  • Seek professional medical attention if the scabies has not improved after 10 days of home treatment.
