Drawing attention to your best features and dressing with a few key principles are the best ways to make yourself look ten pounds lighter. Most likely, you can make yourself look thinner by using what you already have in your closet. With a modest investment, you can buy a few items that complete your slimmer look.

Remember that you do not have to make drastic changes in how you present yourself. You will feel more comfortable if you still wear your favorite labels, colors and styles.

Step 1

Keep your posture straight and confident. When you stand up tall, you automatically tone your abdominal muscles and tuck your tailbone slightly forward. This creates the illusion of muscle tone or weight loss.

Step 2

Wear clothes that create proportion for your body's shape. Adam Glassman, creative director of "O, The Oprah Magazine," offers guidelines for different shapes. If you are pear-shaped, then darker bottoms and interesting tops draw eyes upward. If you want to downplay a heavier upper half, then wear simple blouses and shirts.

Step 3

Avoid bulky clothes. Pants with lots of pockets, puffy sleeves on blouses and extra baggy clothes generally create the appearance that there is more of you. Keep in mind that this may depend on your body shape though. For example, pear-shaped people can get away with eye-catching details and a little more bulk on the upper half of their body.

Step 4

Wear a size that fits you no matter what the number. Wearing clothes that are too tight only accentuate problem areas and clothes that are too big create a sloppy look, which does little to camouflage extra weight.

Step 5

Wear clothes that highlight your most flattering features. If you have a slim waist, then accent it with an eye-catching belt or highlight toned arms with a sleeveless top. Use accessories to emphasize your best assets, as well. A V-neck top or a scarf can draw attention to your neck and face. Metallic shoes or dressy sandals draw eyes to ankles and calves.

Step 6

Find the right undergarments. Discovery's TLC show, "What Not to Wear," suggests wearing the right bra to help slim you instantly. You can find out your correct bra size for free at most lingerie stores. Adam Glassman, emphasizes that you can also wear shape-wear or underwear that gently shapes the body such as girdles or control-top hose.

Step 7

Try a flattering, new haircut. "She Knows Beauty and Style" recommends hairstyles with a few layers that frame the face and make it look more oval than round. Add slight volume to your hair with hair products to make your hair look bigger, which can help your face look smaller. Avoid straight bob styles and bangs.

Step 8

Wear the same color on the top and bottom, when in doubt. Then, dress up your best features with accessories.
