Though often overlooked, cuticles play an important part in the structure of your nails. When cuticles are left uncared for, they become dry and dehydrated, resulting in painful and unsightly hangnails. Your cuticles are significant because they form a seal between the skin and the nail plate and help protect your body from yeast, bacteria and fungus. One way to maintain your cuticles is with nail cuticle oil. Nail cuticle oil is beneficial to your cuticles because it keeps them hydrated and contributes to the growth of harder, healthier looking nails.
Step 1
Remove any nail polish from your nails using a gentle nail polish remover. Rinse your hands with warm soapy water to remove any remaining residue. Dry your nails and cuticles with a towel.
Step 2
Mix 2 tsp. of eucalyptus oil and 1 tsp. of jojoba oil together.
Step 3
Massage the oil mixture thoroughly into your cuticles with your fingertips. Wash your nails and cuticles with warm, soapy water and dry with a towel.
Step 4
Apply a cuticle remover to your cuticles. Use an orangewood stick to push your cuticles back. Gently move the orangewood stick back and forth around your cuticles to remove dead skin. Repeat this process two to three times for each nail.
Step 5
Wipe away any dead skin, debris and particles away from your cuticles with a cotton ball.
Step 6
Apply moisturizer to your hands, paying special attention to your nails and cuticles.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid over-grooming your cuticles as it could cause damage. Avoid using metal instruments when grooming your cuticles. Metal instruments can be harmful to the delicate skin. Keep nail cuticle oil handy in your purse or at your desk to use whenever your cuticles become dry. Promptly take care of cuts to your cuticles to ensure bacteria and infection do not set in.
- Do not cut cuticles as this is an open door to infections. Cuticles should be cut by a professional manicurist only.
