The first thing many people turn to when they have dandruff, itchiness or other scalp problems is an over-the-counter medicated shampoo. However, applying everyday olive oil to your scalp two to three times per week also can be an effective remedy, notes Greta Breedlove in her book "Herbal Treatments for Healthy Hair." Even if you don't have scalp problems, she says, it's not a bad idea to use olive oil on your scalp monthly to promote healthy skin and possibly even prevent scalp issues. Olive oil is inexpensive, widely available and chemical-free, making it a practical and natural alternative.
Step 1
Wet your hair with warm water. This will prevent the olive oil from soaking into your hair so that your scalp receives the maximum benefits from the oil. Blot any excess water from your hair with the towel, but be sure your hair is still damp, especially at its roots.
Step 2
Part your hair with a comb. Apply olive oil to your exposed scalp with your fingers.
Step 3
Make another part about a half-inch away from the first. Apply olive oil to that section of scalp.
Step 4
Continue sectioning your hair with the comb and applying the oil until your entire scalp is covered. Massage your scalp gently with your fingertips--but not your nails--for one to two minutes.
Step 5
Place the plastic bag or shower cap over your scalp and hair. If necessary, first clip your hair up onto your head to help the bag or cap fit properly. Wrap the bath towel around your head over the bag or cap--it's OK if the towel is still damp.
Step 6
Let the oil and wrap sit for at least 30 minutes.
Step 7
Shampoo as you normally would. You might need to lather twice or use more shampoo than usual to remove all of the oil. Follow with your usual conditioner.
Tips and Warnings
- Wear an old shirt and pants or other garments that you don't mind getting oil stains on. Even if you've covered your shoulders with a second towel, some oil might still land on your clothes. If you prefer, you can apply the oil with a clean, dry paintbrush instead of with your fingertips. Be sure to do the massage with your fingers, though. You can warm the olive oil for 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave first if you like--experiment to see what works best on your scalp.
- If you choose to warm the olive oil first, use a microwave-safe container and take care not to get it so hot that it could burn or scald you.
