Tae bo is an exercise program that combines martial arts and boxing moves with various dance steps to create an intense, full-body workout. Tae bo was created and developed by martial artist Billy Blanks, and promoted heavily via infomercial in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The term tae is Korean for "foot and leg," and bo is short for "boxing," according to Blanks. Blanks also uses tae bo as an acronym for total, awareness, excellence, body and obedience. Tae bo is often used generically to describe any combat-related aerobics class, but the term itself is a registered trademark, specifically describing the Blanks system.
Step 1
Commit to sticking with the exercise program until you see the results you want. Tae bo is intense and challenging. Create a reward system where you spoil yourself at different points along the way, or recruit a friend, so you can be accountable to one another. Visualize the result you want to achieve to help keep you on track.
Step 2
Select the specific tae bo program that appeals to your personal style and fitness level, and purchase it. There are a variety of tae bo products and videos available.
Step 3
Designate a space in your home where you can have a television, and several feet in every direction to work out. Tae bo is a high-energy workout that involves moving, kicking and punching in all directions, so you want enough space to comfortably practice the routines.
Step 4
Follow the instructions and movements in the videos carefully. Perform the kicks, punches and footwork to the best of your abilities. Many of the martial arts moves will feel awkward at first, but will come to you in time. Each routine was crafted to achieve specific results, so the key is to stay with it.
Step 5
Register for a tae bo class. Billy Blanks has a tae bo instructor-certification program, and several states are home to certified tae bo instructors who can teach you.
