There are many ways to improve your dart throwing temporarily. You might have had success by plastering a picture of your least favorite athlete over the dartboard, or tried out a funky new technique that resulted in several bull's eyes. But there's no gimmick to winning at darts: It requires perfection of the technique as well as unwavering focus and stillness. Since the game depends on physics, you're unlikely to lose the throwing technique once you've mastered it.

Step 1

Make sure the shoulder of your dart-throwing arm is completely still. Any movement will completely throw off your mechanics. Bend your elbow to a 90-degree angle.

Step 2

Swing the dart back slightly before throwing. This helps develop a smooth rhythm in your technique. Keep the phrase "one ... two" in mind to improve consistency.

Step 3

Throw several darts to discover your optimal release point. You might find that your throwing motion is best suited to a very early or very late release. Remember your most accurate release point when you find it, and release the dart from that position every time.

Step 4

Try adding a flick of your wrist after finding your release point. This adds acceleration to your throw, which lessens the chance of the dart veering off target. Abandon the extra wrist movement if it disrupts your rhythm too much.

Step 5

Relax your fingers and keep your arm outstretched. The follow-through is one of the most important parts of your throwing motion. The arm must be forward with no bend in the elbow. Otherwise, you have failed to follow the parabolic motion required for successful dart throwing.
