You can find ping pong, also called table tennis, played in homes and recreational centers by people of all ages. Although it is just a fun hobby for most players, the highest level competitors compete in international competitions, including the Olympics. If you want to take your game to the next level, or just make sure you can have a fun, competitive game, give some thought to how you select your ping pong paddle.

Step 1

Gather paddles with different shape frames. Pick a frame shape, the part of the paddle you use to hit the ball with, that fits your skill and experience level. Choose a standard, rounded frame if you are a beginner or intermediately skilled player.

Step 2

Grip the handle to check the grip style. Players who prefer to play with a forehand racket position should select a flared handle. Select a straight handle if you are a backhand-dominant player or have no preference between your backhand and forehand.

Step 3

Weigh the paddle. To maximize power, pick a paddle weighing over 90 grams. Pick a paddle between 70 and 76 grams to increase your ability to put spin on your shots.

Step 4

Measure the paddle covering's thickness. Use a thicker rubber surface, 2.0 mm, to hit with maximum speed. Select a 1- to 1.5-mm-thick piece of rubber for increased spin control but reduced speed.

Step 5

Play with your paddle before purchasing to confirm that the paddle feels comfortable and provides the performance you are looking for.

Tips and Warnings
