Concealer offers better coverage than regular foundation, and is useful for covering up dark under-eye circles and other blemishes. It is less transparent than foundation, which means it can cover darker and larger blemishes without the need for multiple layers of product. Applying concealer properly will ensure that you get the best coverage possible without looking unnatural. You may need to test several different types and colors before finding a concealer that best suits your needs and skin tone.
Step 1
Choose a concealer that is as close to your natural skin tone as possible. If the concealer is too dark, it will add to under-eye shadows, and if it is too light, it will draw attention to blemishes and emphasize dark areas. If you cannot find a product that is a match to your skin tone, stick to concealers that are no more than one shade lighter than the darkest areas on your face.
Step 2
Moisturize your face before applying concealer. Concealer is thicker than foundation and will cake and clump when applied over very dry skin. This will make blemishes and wrinkles more noticeable.
Step 3
Put a small amount of concealer on your fingertip and dot it on the area beneath your eyes. Apply the concealer gently. Do not press down forcibly or rub the makeup on. If you find yourself applying too much pressure, try using your ring finger to dot the concealer on. Alternatively, you can use a special brush with a tapered tip designed for applying concealer.
Step 4
Begin at the outside corner of your eye and move inward. If you need more concealer, apply the second coat starting at the inside corner and work outward.
Step 5
Blend the concealer into your skin using a makeup sponge or your fingertip. Do not rub the concealer, as doing so will make it uneven and highlight any wrinkles in the area.
Step 6
Cover blemishes elsewhere on your face after finishing with your eyes. Apply a dab of concealer directly to the blemish, and then blend outward and into your skin.
Step 7
Apply foundation, if necessary. Use a makeup sponge to gently blend the foundation into the concealer line. Do not rub over the concealer with your sponge, as doing so will wipe it away. If you need extra coverage, you can apply a small amount of concealer after your foundation, but before applying powder.
Step 8
Look at your face in a mirror under natural light. Touch up any uneven areas before proceeding with the rest of your makeup application.
