Natural Health International Inc., the company that imports the Original Himalayan Crystal Salt, touts its product as more healthy, ancient and pure than table salt. The salt, reportedly mined from a location that once contained ancient oceans, contains the world's highest elemental content, according to the company. MayoClinic.com, however, says sea salt and table salt have about the same nutritional value. So take health benefit claims, as they say, with a grain of salt.

Flavor

Himalayan crystal salt manufacturers say their product contains 84 nutritional minerals and elements. According to the Global Healing Center, "this salt's unique cellular structure allows it to store vibrational energy. Its minerals exist in a colloidal form, meaning that they are tiny enough for our cells to easily absorb them." However, according to MayoClinic.com, the difference between sea salt---such as Himalayan crystal salt---and table salt is about taste and texture, not chemical makeup. Sea salt's minimal processing does leave some trace minerals and elements, but they're too insignificant to add any nutritional value.

Health Benefits

The Global Healing Center lists several health benefits that Himalayan crystal salt might provide including: aiding absorption capacities of food elements within the intestinal tract; improving respiratory function; lowering incidence of sinus problems; reducing muscle cramps and creating healthy libido. More scientific research is needed to confirm these health benefits.

Brighter Skin

Sea salt---Himalayan crystal salt included---has long been a staple at spas and in skincare products. Himalayan crystal salt scrubs slough off the top layers of dead skin cells, which can look dull and rough. Exfoliating with a salt scrub can help you achieve youthful, glowing skin, according to InspiredLiving.com, and deeply cleanse your pores.
