The condition of your hair roots plays a critical role in hair growth, or lack of hair growth. If your hair roots are unhealthy, clogged or damaged, it can stunt your hair growth and possibly cause scarring of your hair follicles depending upon the type of damage they have been exposed to. Fortunately, there are ways to treat your hair roots from both the inside and outside.
Biotin
Biotin helps promote hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, and is found in many foods such as nuts, bananas, sardines and cooked egg yolks. Typically, adults need 30 mcg of biotin on a daily basis. Certain shampoos contain biotin as it helps clean the scalp as well as deliver nutrients to your hair. While biotin promotes hair growth, it also aids with dry, flaky skin. Dry, flaky skin can clog hair follicles which impedes hair growth at the root. Certain conditioners also use biotin to restore hydration to your hair and scalp.
Omega-6 Fatty Acids
Omega-6 fatty acids stimulate hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Omega-6 fatty acids are important for the growth of your hair and skin as well as maintaining your reproductive system and bone health. Omega-6 fatty acids need to be balanced with omega-3 fatty acids, as omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation and omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in foods such as whole grains, fruits, garlic, fish oils and vegetables. Depending upon your nutritional needs, your physician may recommend a safe daily dosage specifically for you. Omega-6 fatty acids can interact with medications such as certain antibiotics, blood thinners and medications used to treat schizophrenia.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil, also marketed as Rogaine, is a topical solution which is applied to your scalp. Minoxidil promotes hair growth starting at the roots. Typically hair growth is seen within a few weeks to a few months after beginning treatment and ceases once you quit using the solution, according to Drugs.com. Those who are breastfeeding have high blood pressure or heart disease should consult with their physician prior to using Rogaine. Rogaine is approved for men and women; although, the use of Rogaine on children has not been studied so the safety for children has not yet been established.
