Dark circles under the eyes can be the result of various factors such as fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, poor nutrition, allergies, medications or heredity, reports Natural Eye Care. Getting rid of dark circles requires first identifying the cause. Try eliminating as many potential factors as possible through home remedies. According to MayoClinic.com, most dark circles do not require medical attention, but if you have swelling under just one eye that becomes worse over time, see your doctor.

Step 1

Place a cold compress on your eyes. Mayo Clinic recommends using two chilled teaspoons, a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a soft cloth, or a cooled teabag. The cold can help reduce dilated blood vessels, which appear darker under the skin. According to Natural Eye Care, using rosemary tea bags may also boost circulation under the eyes, which can help reduce swelling.

Step 2

Get 8 hours of sleep a night to ensure you are well rested.

Step 3

Eat a plant-based diet and drink plenty of water. Natural Eye Care recommends avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

Step 4

Use extra pillows at night. The elevation can keep fluids from pooling around your eyes, which can contribute to puffiness, reports MayoClinic.com.

Step 5

Eliminate allergens from your environment as much as possible. According to MotherNature.com, dust, pollen and pet dander are common allergens that can contribute to under eye circles, as are foods such as milk, wheat and chocolate.

Step 6

Place raw cucumber or potato slices on your eyes, or combine fresh cucumber juice with lemon juice and lanolin cream and apply to the eye area to 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 7

Rinse your sinuses with a saltwater solution. According to MayoClinic.com, nasal congestion is one of the most common causes of dark circles under the eyes. When your nose is congested, veins under the eyes cannot drain into the nose, and become wider and darker. Use over-the-counter saline spray to relieve congestion, or mix 1/4 tsp. salt with 2 cups warm water.
