In 10-pin bowling games, players bowl 10 frames each. If you bowl a perfect game, you earn 300 points, the highest possible score in 10-pin bowling. Many beginning bowlers let the automated scorer at the bowling alley keep track of their points during a game. Once you understand how the scoring works, you can keep track of your score yourself. When you record your own score, you will be able to see the impact of spares and strikes on your game more clearly.

Step 1

Throw the ball down the lane for your first bowl in the first frame. Count the number of pins you knock down. If you knock down all 10 pins for a strike, record an X in the first frame on your scorecard.

Step 2

Throw the ball down the lane for your second bowl in the first frame if you knocked down fewer than 10 pins with your first bowl. If you knock down all of the remaining pins for a spare, record a slash in the first frame on your scorecard. If some pins remain standing, record the total number of pins you knocked over with both bowls in the first frame.

Step 3

Record 10 plus the number of pins you knock down with your next bowl in the second frame if you earned a spare on your first turn.

Step 4

Record 10 pins plus the number of pins you knock down with the next two bowls if you earned a strike on your first turn. For example, if you bowl a strike on your first turn and then two more strikes on your second and third turns, record a 30 in the first frame.

Step 5

Bowl one extra time if you earn a spare in the 10th frame. Bowl two extra times if you earn a strike in the last frame.

Step 6

Add your scores for all 10 frames to determine your total score for the game.
