Visitors to Houston can jog, dance, and celebrate diversity in June. Tourists will want to consider the weather when planning outside activities during the month. The average temperature in June is 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with highs that reach 93 degrees and lows that only cool off to 75 degrees. The average humidity in June is 73 percent, which makes things muggy. Some activities are scheduled early in the morning or at night to make it more pleasant for participants and visitors.
Houston Heights Fun Run
Lace up the jogging shoes and get moving in the Houston Heights Fun Run. Every June, the small-town community in the heart of Houston sponsors the run. It usually kicks off early in the day with a sanctioned race. That's followed by a walking event and a Kids 1K. The run ends at Marmion Park where the post-race party begins. Participants and visitors celebrate with food, juice and music while awards are announced.
Houston Juneteenth Celebration
A month-long festival marks the date in 1865 when Texan slaves were freed by the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Different organizations sponsor events, parades and musical performances in celebration of African-American heritage. Various venues throughout the city welcome participants. Families and friends also celebrate with get-togethers, cookouts, religious gatherings, and live music. The Houston Institute for Culture, with support from the City of Houston, helps organize the events.
Houston Astros Baseball
Bring your baseball glove and try to catch a foul ball at a Houston Astros game. The local Major League Baseball team, the Astros play at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. The play begins every year in March and there are always home games in June. Individual or group tickets are available. Special promotions, food and games are available to visitors.
Gay Pride Parade
The historic LGBT Pride Parade and Festival celebrated its 32nd anniversary in 2010. It's held annually in June and is the only night-time parade in the US; it is the follow-up to the Pride Festival in the afternoon. The festival has music, food and exhibits. The parade route follows Westheimer Avenue in the Montrose District of the city. Floats are the main parade attraction and visitors can get exercise by walking the parade route which runs about three miles.
Hermann Park: Canada Day
Wave the red-and-white flag and join in the fun on Canada Day. The day is celebrated annually in Houston, the last weekend in June. The city's Hermann Park welcomes the day-long event, hosted by the Canadian Club of Houston. Speakers, food and music highlight the event, but visitors can play in the park as well. Tourists can pedal a boat on the lake, jog on the trails or take a ride on the miniature railroad.
