Tying a belt is one of the earliest things any karate student will learn. Many karate dojos have different techniques on tying the belt. Some studios put great importance on the technique used to tie the belt, while others do not seem to have a specific way to do it. According to All-karate.com, the belt should be above the hips, the loose ends of the belt should point downward and the belt should not cross itself at the back.
Step 1
Place your right hand at about three hand lengths from the end of your belt.
Step 2
Place the point of the belt that is in your right hand on your right hip.
Step 3
Wrap your belt counterclockwise around your waist twice.
Step 4
Wrap the long loose end of your belt up and under the wraps around your waist.
Step 5
Align both loose ends of your belt so that they are centered on your waist, dangling freely.
Step 6
Place the left end of your belt over the right end.
Step 7
Loop the left end through the loop created by the ends of your belt crossing.
Step 8
Tighten your belt down to your waist, making sure to keep the knot centered on your waist.
