Proper skin care is essential for skin health and to prevent signs of premature aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. According to Kristi Harrington, an esthetician in Concord, North Carolina, the skin is the largest organ you have, so it is important to treat it well. Men as well as women should follow a good skin care routine. Make skin care second nature by establishing a routine that includes cleansing, toning, moisturizing and exfoliating.

Step 1

Cleanse you face morning and night using a mild, non-drying facial cleanser.

Step 2

Apply toner to the skin. Harrington notes that toner doesn't have to expensive; simple witch hazel can do the job. Toner helps restore the pH balance of the skin and remove any debris that may have been left over from cleansing.

Step 3

Apply a moisturizer to the skin. Use a moisturizer formulated for your skin type. If you have oily skin, choose an oil-free moisturizer.

Step 4

Apply sunscreen if your moisturizer does not contain it. Moisturizers and makeup that contain sunscreen provide adequate protection.

Step 5

Exfoliate your skin once a week. Harrington offers a simple and inexpensive home recipe for exfoliation. Mix sugar with enough milk to create a yogurt-like consistency, and rub the mixture gently over skin in circles for one minute, then rinse off. You can use this mixture only on the face and neck, or all over the body.
