Digital calipers are special instruments designed to provide precise measurements of various aspects of an object, including width, length and depth. Common uses include the measuring of steps, machine components and parts of a person's body. The device consists of a caliper head and a display unit attached to a measuring bar; each side of the head is equipped with a pair of jaws, one large and one small. Performing measurements with a set of digital calipers is very straightforward, but may require a little practice in order to achieve accurate results.
Step 1
Grip the locking screw located on the edge of the caliper's display. Turn the locking screw until the jaws of the caliper are completely open. Douse a clean cloth with cleaning oil, then use the cloth to wipe down the jaws, the display unit and the object you wish to measure. Use a dry cloth to wipe off any excess oil.
Step 2
Turn the locking screw until the jaws of the caliper are completely closed. Press the power button to activate the device. Press the "mm/inch" button to set the display to the desired setting. Press the "zero" button to reset the display to zero.
Step 3
Place the tip of the caliper's lower jaws next to the edges of the object. Slowly turn the locking screw until the jaws open enough to fit over the edges of the object. Examine the caliper's display and note the exterior width reading. Close the caliper's jaws and press the "zero" button.
Step 4
Insert the tip of the caliper's upper jaws into the interior of the object you wish to measure. Turn the locking screw until the caliper's jaws make contact with the sides of the object's interior. Examine the caliper's display and note the interior width reading. Close the caliper's jaws and press the "zero" button.
Step 5
Pull the slider out of the end of the depth measurement bar. Place the end of the slider inside the object you wish to measure. Adjust the slider until it reaches the bottom of the object. Fit the bottom edge of the depth measurement bar against the top edge of the object. Examine the caliper's display and note the depth measurement reading. Close the caliper's jaws and press the "zero" button. Press the power button to deactivate the device.
Tips and Warnings
- If you are unable to fit the ends of the caliper's jaws over the edges of the object you wish to measure, place the head of the caliper on the ground and lift the opposite end upwards; open the jaws until the "step measurement" face reaches the opposite edge of the object, then note the measurement displayed.
