Early Signs of Liver Failure

The Mayo Clinic states that liver failure can be fatal if medical attention isn't sought immediately. Liver failure occurs when the cells of the liver are damaged beyond repair and the organ fails to function. There are many different causes of liver failure, with acetaminophen overdose being the most common. Many other prescription and herbal medications can damage the liver to the point of failure as well. Other culprits of liver failure may be cancer or other medical conditions. While there are ways to treat liver failure, it is an extremely dangerous situation that requires admittance in the ICU.

Jaundice

The body produces fresh batches of red blood cells each day. The ones that are replaced are sent to the liver to be broken down. The result of this process is bilirubin that is passed into the blood stream. There is usually a small amount of bilirubin traveling though the blood stream at all times. When the liver is damaged, however, bilirubin will build up in the blood stream. Since this substance is yellow colored, the skin and whites of the eyes will begin to turn yellow. The Merck Medical Manual states that jaundice is a common first symptom of liver failure. Anytime a person's skin begins to turn yellow, medical attention should be sought.

Abdominal Tenderness

It is common for patients to feel mild to severe pain in the upper abdomen on the right side when liver failure occurs. The pain is felt in this region because that is the location of the liver. This pain can be sharp, like a knife cutting into the abdomen, and the stomach could be tender to the touch. It can be hard for a person to walk or bend over as normal. Although this symptom is very common for liver failure, it can also be a symptom of varying other medical problems. If severe pain is present at any time, a person should seek immediate medical attention.

Nausea and Vomiting

Anytime there is a problem with one organ, this problem can spread to other organs. If the liver is not functioning properly and is irritated, it can cause the stomach to become irritated as well. This can cause nausea and vomiting in the patient. Some patients could lose their appetite several days before a problem ever occurs to be followed by nausea and vomiting.

Fatigue

Severe fatigue occurs when a patient suffers from liver failure. Malaise and weakness are possible as well. Some people will be suddenly stricken with fatigue and weakness while others will feel it coming on slowly. According to Georgia Health Info, flu-like symptoms can also develop with this ailment.
